That this Council put structures in place for safe crossing at the junction of (a) Plunket Street and Main Street (b) Sweeney's Corner (c) access to public toilets on Kenmare Place.
The pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Plunket Street and Main Street has always been a problem, because for many years there was no clearly painted pedestrian crossing box, therefore traffic would pull right up to the intersection, leaving no space whatsoever for pedestrians to cross and forcing them into the Main Street traffic. The obvious and simple way to solve this problem is to force the Plunket Street traffic to stop a distance before the junction by painting a sufficiently wide pedestrian crossing box for to cross without being forced to endanger their lives. This should have been done years ago, it's so simple to solve.
For Ardshanovooley Estate, do the residents now have their safe road crossing?
The Ardshanovooley Residents Association has recognised that for people in the estate to go to the shop they have to be able to cross the road first. Park Road is a wide and fast road and it beggars disbelief to think that still after all these years there is no way for pedestrians to safely get to the other side!
Apparently Killarney Town Council’s town engineer David Doyle responded that the only thing that the council can do is conduct a traffic survey to see how many people are crossing the road at the estate to estimate (statistically I presume) that a a pedestrian crossing is necessary.
Here's the reality: it'll take only one unfortunate and unnecessary fatality of a child or elderly person to wake up the council to do the right thing and provide a tunnel or such to facilitate traffic and pedestrians without each interfering with the other.
That is simply risk management and doing things according to international best practice.
Do it now before some Ardshanovooley resident's blood is on the council's hands.
