Street seating and furniture

Street seating and furniture

The following motion proposed by Cllr. Tom Doherty was passed at the previous council meeting.

“That this Council instigates an Architectural Award to enhance our street seating and furniture”

As a centre of tourism and commerce the visual aspect and practicality of seating and street furniture is a great addition to the urban environment. Street furniture of different styles can create interest and admiration for a town’s landscape. This concept supported by awnings and canopies can create cover from the various weather conditions which we are subject to from time to time.

As is seen in the outdoor café culture thought-out Europe the vibrancy which can be brought to our town centre is without question. But the question remain, what has stopped us? The lack of a distinct town square, the narrow pavements, the freedom of access of movement by wheelchair users and others!

It is with imagination and creative thinking that these obstacles can be overcome by designing  worthy accessories for the visitor and shoppers experience in Killarney.

It was decided to incorporate a new category within the local tidy town’s awards. I hope that both students and professional alike will take up the challenge and enter this competition  It is an opportunity to make a lasting contribute to our wonderful environs.
